What is Keratoconus?

Keratoconus is a condition where the cornea, bulges outwards into a cone shape instead of a sphere, resulting in a progressive thinning of the cornea. While Keratoconus more commonly affects both eyes, it is not unusual for the Keratoconus to be significantly more advanced in one eye. Keratoconus is usually diagnosed with a corneal topography, an ophthalmoscope, a retinoscope or a slit-lamp examination.

Signs of Keratoconus may include:

• Blurry vision
• Double vision
• Nearsightedness
• Astigmatism, and
• Light sensitivity

Keratoconus is often associated with atopic diseases (hayfever, eczema, allergies, asthma etc) which can result in people having itchy eyes.
